Cruz's bio describes him as:

"Rafael Cruz was born in Matanzas, Cuba. As a teenager in the 1950’s he supported the overthrow of the oppressive Batisa regime—which landed him in prison, where he was tortured. At the time, Castro seemed the better alternative, but Rafael soon learned that the future dictator’s rosy promises were different from the brutal realities of Communism. In 1957 he secured an exit permit and immigrated to the United States.

With little more than $100 to his name and barely able to speak English, he studied mathematics and chemical engineering at the University of Texas. Working seven days a week, he managed to earn a degree and start work in the energy industry. Life has not been easy, but his faith has carried him through. Rafael has passed the lessons of his sometimes-hard life onto his only son, Rafael Edward (Ted) Cruz. They include belief in American liberty and respect for its Constitution—which secures and protects that liberty for all of us."

  1. This is a gorgeous place, and I won't soon forget it. Attended an event here sponsored by the company. The reception hour was held in one of the rooms next to the hall at venue New York. I loved their buttery mashed sweet potato.
