Lyin’ Tom: Casperson Invented Fake Story For Controversial Wolf Resolution

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)
Tom Casperson, the State Senator from Northern Michigan known as the “nation’s most liberal Republican Congressional candidate,” invented a fake story about wolves targeting a daycare in order to make a resolution he championed regarding wolf management sound better.
Casperson was forced to admit the issue after media reports exposed it.
According to MLive:
“State Sen. Tom Casperson apologized Thursday for including a fictional account of a real-life incident in a 2011 resolution urging the U.S. Congress to remove Michigan gray wolves from the federal endangered species list.
The Escanaba Republican, a leading advocate for and sponsor of a law that will lead to Michigan’s first-ever wolf hunt later this month, owned up to the error in a floor speech.
“I was mistaken, I am accountable, and I am sorry,” Casperson told his colleagues. “Words matter. Accuracy matters. Especially here, with a topic that is so emotional and is so important to so many, especially those whose way of life is being changed in my district.
“A decision here of whether or not we use sound science to manage wolves, as with all decisions this body makes, should not be based on emotions, agendas or innuendo, but rather on facts.”
Casperson is battling retired 3 star General Jack Bergman and former State Senator Jason Allen in the MI-1 GOP Primary....

Dems WORRIED: Biden Says He'll Be "Living In Michigan" To Stop Trump

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

Vice President Joe Biden recently said he'll be "living" in Michigan-as well as Ohio and Pennsylvania-in order to make sure the states go to Hillary Clinton in November.

Hillary and Trump have been in a dead heat here for weeks, with one recent poll showing the two tied among Hispanics and Asians, and Trump beating Clinton 3:1 with Independents....

According to reports:

"Vice President Joe Biden says he will spend much of the time leading up to the November general elections by campaigning in Michigan and other Midwestern states.

Biden calls it a bid for Democrats to better connect with working-class voters.

Both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders won Michigan’s presidential primary in March in part because they saidHillary Clinton had backed trade deals that drove manufacturing jobs overseas.

The Clinton campaign has fought that image throughout the presidential contest.

On the MSNBC program “Morning Joe” Vice President Joe Biden told host Joe Scarborough the Democratic Party is dispatching him to Michigan and other battleground states in the industrial Midwest to make the case for Clinton.

Biden said, “That’s why I’m going to be living in Pennsylvania and Ohio and Michigan. I think the Democratic Party overall hasn’t spoken enough to those voters. I think there has been, in both parties, not enough respect shown to ordinary people.”

Calhoun County Clerk Anne Norlander Busted Plotting Pay Raise By Targeting Gun Owners+Taxpayers As Corruption Allegations Swirl

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

Calhoun County Clerk Anne Norlander planned a pay raise for herself and two top staffers by targeting gun owners and other taxpayers for fee increases specifically designed to line her pockets, documents obtained by WMP show.

In a series of emails, Norlander lays out how the plan will work, targeting gun owners applying for CPL's, as well as taxpayers needing documents related to births, marriages, and deaths, hitting them at times that can hurt the most...

Documents obtained by WMP also show other possible trouble areas for the controversial clerk. Norlander apparently gave staff members gift cards multiple times and sought reimbursements for items some say taxpayers shouldn't fit the bill for, the same type of expenses she once campaigned against.

Subsequently, WMP has learned that multiple people Norlander claims are endorsing her are no longer doing so as calls for an investigation into her office are growing...

According to testimony from concerned local realtor Matthew Davis at a 2015 County Commission meeting:

"Good evening Commissioners.

I have a number of questions regarding the Clerk and Register of Deeds Anne Norlander and reimbursement payments made to her by Calhoun County in 2013 and 2014.

First, why was she reimbursed $200 in March of 2013, for transporting a brass table, 8 brass chairs, one cabinet, and 2 faux trees to Kalamazoo?  Does Calhoun County maintain any offices or conduct any activities in Kalamazoo County?  Why are there  no records regarding the purchase by the County or sale by the County of these items?  Why does the County have no other records regarding the disposition of those items which taxpayer money was used to transport to Kalamazoo?

Second, why was the Clerk reimbursed for purchasing gift cards for her employees in a payment voucher dated 12/19/14 and in regard to which the payment voucher states:  “reimbursement for transition for 2015”?

Third, why was the clerk reimbursed $250.00 for gift cards for her employees on 12/18/13, in an Expense Voucher titled:  “Circuit Court Clerks Staff Training and Clerk and Register of Deeds Staff training?

Fourth and finally, why was the Clerk reimbursed for $500 in January of 2014 from the Register of Deeds Automation fund for services she obtained from William Schroer related to her application for a WK Kellogg Foundation fellowship?

Was she awarded the fellowship?  How would that fellowship have contributed to the automation of the office of the register of deeds?  Why doesn’t the clerk have a copy of the fellowship application referenced in that invoice?  Why doesn’t the clerk have a copy of the proposal referenced in Mr. Schroer’s invoice?

These are taxpayer dollars and the answers to each of these questions should be:  “these were appropriate governmental expenditures for an allowable governmental purpose.  Short and sweet.  I ask each of you, Can that be said about these expenditures by the Clerk?

I have prepared a packet for each of the Commissioners containing these documents, all obtained through FOIA requests to Calhoun County.  I have also prepared a packet for Prosecutor Gilbert.  I would urge that the County request the assistance of the State Police and the Michigan Attorney General in investigating these expenditures."

Davis also raised issues with the commission previously regarding Norlander and corruption allegations.

"I’d like an update on the status of my request to investigate, via a forensic audit, to budgets of the Clerk and Register of Deeds Automation and general fund budget?  I know you don’t have to respond directly to me at a meeting or at all, but since I have not heard from anyone regarding this request, I will continue to ask you during public time about it.

I would like to inform you of a lack of transparency, best practices and general management in County ClerkNorlander’s office purchasing policies. This misfeasance has cost the county taxpayers countless thousands, if not hundred of thousands of dollars in lost savings due to the Clerk not, in any way following County policy--or any policy--related to the purchasing of services and supplies.  Basically, the Clerk is bypassing board approval of high dollar contract by signing them herself and then concurrently, taking PAC funding from those very same vendors for her re-election campaign.  Tonight I will focus on Cherry Lan/Deketo;

Cherry Lan/Deketo, a vendor in Traverse City, provides software and web services to the Clerk’s office via a series of no bid contracts coupled with large campaign contributions over the years, continuing to her current campaign this year.   In response to one of my Foia’s, Mrs. Norlander through the County Foia coordinator states that her office has no purchasing process.

As you  know County Board Purchasing Policy, #405, applies to all annual purchases over $20,000.00 and requires a sealed bid process and BOC approval.

In June of 2004 the CC BOC approved a (3) year service agreement between Cherry LAN Systems, Inc. and Clerk/Register at the rate of $17,700 per year to be funded from Tech (Automation) fund.  This was not bid, it was just an “agreement from the Clerk’s office…” and no records show any sealed bid process used

At the end of that initial agreement, the BOC was cut out of the decision making process, as was the County’s purchasing department.

On 1/1/07 Clerk Norlander, Not the board chair at the time as required by policy 405, signs “Cherry LAN Software License/Enhancements Agreement.  This agreement is perpetual/forever and renews automatically until one or the other parties give 90 day notice.  The board never approved this further expenditure, nor its never ending status.

In 2008 –that contract increased to $3000/ Month to Cherry LAN for “Lic Enhancement.” – and has continued ever since $36,000 per year, again no BOC approval.

In April of 08 – In addition to the monthly fee, a Payment of $9,600 was made to Cherry Lan for “Credit Card module” – no bid process, no board approval, and furthermore there are other large one time expenditures that of unknown purpose like this during this time.  All done in the dark of County oversight.

3-4-09 – George Delamater contributes $3,400.00 to Anne Norlander’s Secretary of State Campaign.

12-31-09 – Susan Nelson contributes $2,000 to Anne Norlander’s Secretary of State Campaign. Employer listed as “Executive – Cherry LAN Systems.”

2-16-11 – Clerk signs a Letter of Understanding with Cherry LAN Systems, Inc. regarding Michigan Court Connect Web.  Not a contract, and Not approved by BOC. It is user fee based only, but for some reason there is a $3400 expenditure to Cherry Lan for this software during that time period.  Unfortunately, without a Circuit Court searchable database, victims are not able to use to find Circuit Court cases, because the software does not work and hasn’t for well over a year.

6-8-11 – Clerk signs a Software License and Maintenance Agreement between Deketo, LLC and “Calhoun County Register of Deeds” which indicates that as of 4-13-11 Gregory  Nelson, Paul DeCoeur and George F. DeLaMater formally divided Cherry LAN Systems into two companies, Cherry LAN and Deketo.  Deketo constitutes the former “Register of Deeds and Clerk Vital Records” branch of CLS.  Not approved by County Board.  Signed by George DeLaMater

8-3-11 – George DeLamater contributes $500 to Clerk’s reelection campaign (page 2 of 36 2011 Annual statement)  9-30-15 – George DeLamater contributes $1,000 to Clerk’s reelection campaign (page 34 of 36 of 10-26-15 quarterly report

I repeat my calls for an investigation, and forensic audit of the Clerk’s office finances and budget and furthermore feel this should be expanded to a review of the Clerk’s office policies and procedures that clearly do not follow the County’s BOC’s own passed policies.

I know none of you believe this is good government and as such I ask, and will continue to ask, that you push back against this crony capitalism and the use of the Clerk’s office for partisan and private gain.  Please strive toward what the residents of calhoun county deserve-- county services that are efficient, use best practices and are done with high stewardship of the public's trust at the forefront.  Thank you."

Breaking: Feel The Berg? Retired General Jack Bergman Surges In Private MI-1 Polls

Jack Bergman
By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

It was long thought to be a two-man race between State Senator Tom Casperson and former lawmaker Jason Allen in Michigan's competitive 1st Congressional District Republican primary, but WMP has learned multiple private polls indicate retired 3 star General Jack Bergman is not only competitive-he damn well may win!

In a sign that campaigns are responding to Bergman's numbers, Casperson released a hit piece on Bergman earlier this week, but the move may prove to be too little, too late, an attempt as desperate as it is futile.

"Establishment liberals like Casperson have no problem throwing a great veteran like Bergman under the bus," said Matt Maddock, a leader of the Michigan Conservative Coalition. "They'll do ANYTHING to try to keep their power. Good voters in the 1st will see right through this cowardly hit from behind."

Bergman's campaign fired back in a statement.

“Tom Casperson was caught lying once before, and he's been caught lying again” Tony Lis, Bergman Campaign Manager said. “Jack has never run for political office and has run a positive campaign based on his service to the nation. He served his country for over 40 years and spent much of his free time working to help veterans, unlike his opponent who spent his time helping special interests in Lansing. Attacking a retired general for helping his former troops is despicable and not representative of the values of Northern Michigan. I ask that voters join me in calling on Casperson to take down this untruthful ad.”

And Bergman responded with an ad of his own...

According to MIRS:

"A new ad released by retired Lt. Gen. Jack BERGMAN calls Sen. Tom CASPERSON (R-Escanaba) a liar over a recent Casperson ad that said Bergman was a former lobbyist who owned a company that targeted veterans. Bergman and Casperson are in a three-way GOP primary race in Michigan's 1st Congressional District. Former State Senator Jason ALLEN is the other candidate in the field.
Bergman's 30-second spot features the following script spoken as photos of Casperson in and around a large truck appear as a backdrop.

“Tom Casperson wouldn't know the truth if it hit him with a truck.”

“This time he's lying about Jack Bergman. He says Jack was a lobbyist - - a lie. He says Jack owned a company that targeted veterans - another lie.”

“Just more dirty tricks from a political insider. Let's tell Casperson to hit the road”

“Then Bergman appears on the screen as says - “If you want change in Washington send a straight-talking Marine Corps general. I'll get the job done.” I'm Lt. Gen. Jack Bergman and I approve this message.”

Saul Says "It's Time For Trump" As Day Also Backs Republican Nominee

Day, center, with Anuzis, right (Photo by DarKen Photography)

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

Now that Donald Trump is officially the Republican Party's nominee, Cruz supporters Saul Anuzis and Wendy Day are backing "The Donald."

"I can support Cruz and support our GOP candidate against horrible Hillary in November," Day said over the weekend, referring to Cruz's re-election efforts in Texas in 2018.

"The DNC is such a hot mess," Day said as the Dem convention kicked off. "The likelihood of our ticket prevailing in November is increasing with every day. Good news for the GOP!‪#‎neverhillary‬"
Anuzis was much more vocal in his support of Trump, writing a Facebook statement you can read below titled "It's Time for Trump."

"My "conscience" can't let me stand on the sidelines or cast a protest vote that help elects Hillary Clinton President," Anuzis said.
"Like it or not, this is a "time for choosing" and I chose Trump/Pence in 2016!"

>>>Anuzis Statement On Trump:

"I joined the overwhelming majority of Republican delegates at the Republican Convention in Cleveland and voted for Donald Trump to be our party's nominee.

As a movement conservative and an early and passionate supporter of Ted Cruz, it wasn't an easy decision. And I must say, Trump's attacks and comments about Cruz are unnecessary and disappointing. We need to just move on.

I watched and heard Ted Cruz's speech. I then read it again. And I agree…

"We deserve leaders who stand for principle. Unite us all behind shared values. Cast aside anger for love. That is the standard we should expect, from everybody.

And to those listening, please, don't stay home in November. Stand, and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution." said Cruz.

Today, for me…that candidate "up" the ticket is Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

I have serious concerns - I prefer someone philosophically grounded and more consistently conservative. I listened intently to what Donald Trump has had to say and what his friends and family shared with us. Issues like NATO, Free Trade and Liberty to name a few, cause pause and raise questions.

But elections are about choices. And there are ONLY two viable options for the American people. The Republican, Donald Trump and the Democrats nominee, Hillary Clinton.

In that match up, I chose Trump!

Then you add Mike Pence…Governor Pence is a solid conservative who I have known for years. I trust him, I have faith in him and I know he will be an important part of this effort.

Yes, I completely understand your right to vote for a third party. The political reality is that a vote for ANY other candidate or party is a vote for Hillary Clinton. They can't win and a protest vote only helps the Democrats.

And yes, you can just "not vote". But again, sitting on your hands might as well be a vote for Hillary. If you sit on the side lines and withhold your vote from Donald Trump, you are helping Hillary win.
My "conscience" can't let me stand on the sidelines or cast a protest vote that help elects Hillary Clinton President.

We know Hillary Clinton and we know what she stands for.
Hillary Clinton means at least four more years of Obama's disastrous policies.

Hillary Clinton means we will have one of America's most crocked, privileged and lying political figures as our President.

Hillary Clinton means liberal appointments to the Supreme Court and other federal judgeship that will change the America we know for decades to come.

Hillary Clinton means we institutionalize Obama Care and permanently "socialize" a very large segment of our economy…providing inefficient, expensive and politicized heath care.

Hillary Clinton means "crony capitalism" will dominate our economy and policy choices. Sweetheart deals like Solyndra will be the norm, labor unions will get favored status, schools of choice will be seriously challenged and religious liberty will be at risk.

It's NOT a simple choice, but it's really kind of an easy one.
It's Donald Trump vs Hillary Clinton.

America can't afford to risk another Clinton presidency.
So for that reason alone, my "conscience" requires me as a party guy, a semi-establishment type of activists to vote and support Donald Trump.

I am betting on Donald Trump, with Mike Pence at his side, will "stand for principle. Unite us all behind shared values. Cast aside anger for love…(and with cautious optimism) trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution."

Like it or not, this is a "time for choosing" and I chose Trump/Pence in 2016!"

Make Philly Great Again: Michigan Dems Donkey Sports Trump Hat At DNC

Meanwhile, in Philly at the DNC....

*Such* a great microcosm of the Trump/Clinton race in Michigan, our state is in a statistical dead heat and in position to go RED in November!!!

Hillary holds just a 2% lead when factoring in the margin of error to the RCP average, and she definitely doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt in that arena after what Bernie did to her a few months ago...Get ready for the sequel!!

Breaking: Hacked DNC Emails Show Dems Plotted Disgusting "Flint Hit" To Attack Snyder

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

Leaked DNC emails from WikiLeaks show the water crisis in Flint is nothing but a political football for DNC Debbie and her pals in Washington.

Not a single remorseful word can be found out of thousands of conversations, yet there is no shortage of discussion plotting a "Flint Hit" in a series of emails designed to use the situation to attack Gov. Snyder during President Obama's visit there...

And yes, "Flint Hit" is the words THEY used!

Below, read the email chain discussing the "Flint Hit," and read the originals HERE

"The purpose of this hit was to get in AM Michigan stories ahead of the president's visit today which is why I submitted it yesterday. We missed the boat for print but obviously can get inserted into some afternoon online stories. One more edit to the quote below."

From: Freundlich, Christina Sent: Wednesday, May 04, 2016 9:51 AM To: Helmstetter, TJ; Walker, Eric; Walsh, Tom; Miranda, Luis; Paustenbach, Mark Cc: Price, Jenna Subject: RE: DRAFT: Flint hit for tomorrow

Bumping this again for a third time. I made the changes below re: Trump

From: Helmstetter, TJ Sent: Tuesday, May 03, 2016 2:33 PM To: Freundlich, Christina; Walker, Eric; Walsh, Tom; Miranda, Luis; Paustenbach, Mark Cc: Price, Jenna Subject: DRAFT: Flint hit for tomorrow

Jenna wrote the first draft of this. My edits are incorporated. Would like this to go out first thing tomorrow AM (should be approved today) to coincide with President's visit. I can start sending to Michigan outlets today for use in their AM stories. Thanks.

From Republican Governor Rick Snyder's failure to attend the Congressional hearings, to last week when he suggested he would not meet with the President during his visit to Michigan, Republicans continue to avoid responsibility for the Flint water crisis. The GOP candidates running for president are no different, as they have continued to rally in defense of Snyder, despite the findings of negligence from the Republican Governor and his administration.

During the debate in Detroit, the GOP candidates spent more time throwing insults, than addressing pressing issues like water crisis in Flint, effecting the lives of thousands of Americans just 66 miles from the debate stage. Today, as President Obama heads to Flint to discuss the failures of the water crisis with Governor Snyder, let's not forget that Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee, refused to comment on the crises

take a look back at the very little the Republicans have had to say on the issue:

* Kasich admitted that he didn't "..know all the details"
Trump said, "..I shouldn't be commenting on Flint."
* Cruz blamed Democrats and suggested repealing anti-poverty programs in Flint.

"President Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Democrats across the country continue to prioritize justice for the people of Flint, who are still suffering the effects of a devastating public health crisis. Meanwhile, the Republican Party turns a blind eye. Trump, Cruz, and Kasich can barely muster a response to the Flint crisis, let alone hold Rick Snyder accountable for his failure. Americans deserve better." -- spox"

Media TRASHES Melania, Ignores Major Plagiarism Issues With Biden+Obama

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

Given the fact that President Obama and Vice President Biden both committed plagiarism and hold far more powerful positions than Melania, I don't see this being an issue Americans care about... Funny how the media hasn't mentioned those cases a single time this week...

No big deal, we're #ReadyForTrump! #MakeAmericaGreatAgain

"Biden announced his candidacy in June 1987, and was considered one of the potentially strongest candidates in the field. However, in September 1987, newspaper stories stated he had plagiarized a speech by British politician Neil Kinnock. Other allegations of past law school plagiarism and exaggerating his academic record soon followed. Biden withdrew from the race later that month"

Why Did Michigan Really Pass In Cleveland?

Trump's Michigan State Director Scott Hagerstrom looks on as MIGOP Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel announces Michigan's votes in Cleveland

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

A small firestorm erupted this week after the Michigan delegation passed when the time came for our state to cast votes. Despite a flurry of rumors, the reason for the pass was to give New York a chance to put Trump over the top.

WMP has learned many states did not want to pass, but Michigan-along with Pennsylvania-were willing to help.
“We were asked by the Trump campaign to pass so New York could cast the votes to put him over the edge," said MIGOP Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel. "We were very happy to join Pennsylvania in offering this honor to our nominee, and we look forward to turning Michigan red in November.”

Romney received praise from across the delegation for her handling of the issue.

"Tonight I was touched when I heard why Ronna Ronna Romney McDaniel , our state chairwoman, announced that the great state of Michigan "passed" on reporting votes for Donald Trump, said Janine Renko Kateff. "I learned that it was to allow NY to be able to announce that they were the state that broke through the required number of votes needed to become the nominee. Ronna then circled back, and announced that Michigan delegates were wearing red shirts to honor Ohio to show them we will all need their votes for Donald Trump in November. Class act! Later I was stopped by some Ohio folks who said that was a classy thing to do and thanked us and wanted a picture!"

Cruz delegate Barbara Bookout also approved of the voting process.

"Thank you to Ronna Romney McDaniels for her straight up handling of the Michigan delegation vote process. My District and County voted for Senator Ted Cruz and I was proud to be one of 6 votes for Cruz in the Presidential Nomination."
