State Rep. Cindy Gamrat is introducing legislation modeled after a bill in Wisconsin that would end abortions in Michigan after 20 weeks.. Unlike that bill, Gamrat's provides for protections if the mother's help is at risk.

Gamrat said in a statement via Facebook:

"Unfortunately, many animals have more protections from death and dismemberment than our unborn children, and these compassionate measures are long overdue. Please support this bill and help us become the next state to offer these compassionate protections to the unborn children of Michigan!"

Gamrat said the bill has informal approval from Right to Life of Michigan, and she plans on introducing the bill this week. It is called "Michigan's Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act."

Here is her full statement:

"This week I will be introducing a bill similar to the one that was just passed by the Wisconsin legislature protecting unborn children from abortions after 20 weeks. I have been working on this bill for some time now, and having received an affirmation on June 30th from Right to Life of Michigan that the bill draft looked very good, I am excited to announce that it will now be ready to receive co-sponsorships this week on the House Floor!

This is a compassionate bill which will protect the most vulnerable and helpless children from being forced to endure the excruciating pain and torture on their little bodies during a late term abortion. As ultrasounds and technology improve, people around the nation are becoming aware of the horrific and inhumane situation being perpetrated on unborn children who undergo late term abortions.

Unlike the Wisconsin passed bill, my bill does offer an exception if it is determined by the physician that the life of the mother is in imminent danger.

Unfortunately, many animals have more protections from death and dismemberment than our unborn children, and these compassionate measures are long overdue. Please support this bill and help us become the next state to offer these compassionate protections to the unborn children of Michigan!"
