Meekhof Hints He Will Push Another Tax Increase, Says Roads Aren't Top Priority

State Sen. Meekhof issued a statement Tuesday night after the epic defeat of the "roads proposal"  no one championed more than him. Proposal One, a $2 billion dollar a year tax increase-the largest in over 50 years-was defeated by a stunning 60 point margin Tuesday as voters sent a clear message they demand Lansing get to work on a REAL roads plan.

Gongwer reports no other proposal has ever been defeated by a larger margin.

In addition to saying roads aren't his top priority, and attempting to insinuate voters didn't reject a tax increase altogether last night, Meekhof says he seeks a "practical and sustainable" plan to fix roads.

Here is his full statement:

“Proposal 1 presented an opportunity to solve our state’s complex road funding problem.  Unfortunately, it was not a solution voters could support.

Many will view the election results as a mandate against increasing taxes to pay for our roads, and while that may be true for some citizens, I believe voters are also sending a message that they expect the legislature to solve this problem.

Road funding issues have plagued Michigan since the current structure was passed in 1997.  It took decades to come up with a compromise and it will take time to come up with an alternative.

Last term, I voted for a legislative solution that restructured fuel taxes and took into account the rising cost of road maintenance. Rest assured, I am ready and willing to be part of a practical and sustainable plan to adequately fund our roads.

The Senate’s first priority remains passage of a budget well ahead of schedule, but I expect the dialogue on road funding to continue.”

All this as Ottawa County, Meekhof's County, rejects Prop 1 84%-16%. Ottawa County is arguably the most prominently Republican/Conservative county in the state...

  1. Of course he'll push for another tax. He's a tax and spend Snyder clone put in place by Establishment money. He'll do what he's told to do. Don't look for any respect for the taxpayers while this guys in the driver's seat. We're just here for the politicians to bleed until we're broke. What's he got to worry about -- ONE more election?
