Wow: Chang Staffer Calls Homeschoolers "Scary"+"Irrational"

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)
“I’ve never seen a lobby more powerful and scary. They make the anti-vaxxers seem rational.”

That's Ellen Heinitz, legislative director for Michigan state Rep. Stephanie Chang, in an interview with the left-leaning Slate website a few weeks ago.

Chang did not rebuke her staffer's comments....

You may remember Chang from previous WMP stories on her disgusting attempt to use a recent tragedy to attack the home school community.

Chang's pushing for for intrusive regulatory measures that wouldn't have even stopped the murder of two kids in her district, an incident that serves as the "inspiration" for her twisted legislation..

A few weeks ago WMP wrote about the "War on Homeschoolers" some are using a tragedy to wage.
"After two Detroit area children died at the hands of their Mother, a legislator  in the area wants to use the tragedy to pass new regulations on home schooled students. State Senator Phil Pavlov blasted the bill, saying it's an attempt to bully home schoolers and he won't even give it a hearing.

I met with some home schooled students in Lansing last week, and I can tell you, the home school community is immensely concerned about this legislation. It's quite disappointing to see this attack on home schoolers, and attached to a tragedy nonetheless? Disgusting.

State Rep. Stephanie Chang

The bill, introduced...by State Rep. Stephanie Chang, would require at least two visits annually with a child from a number of entities the parents would be forced to choose from."
The Detroit News also chimed in, writing:

"The Republican author of the West Michigan Politics blog labeled Chang’s bill a “WAR on HomeSchoolers.”

State Sen. Phil Pavlov, R-St. Clair Township, wrote an open letter Monday to all “Michigan parents” vowing to make sure Chang’s bill never sees “the light of day” in his Senate Education Committee.

Pavlov, who is running for Congress next year, accused Chang of trying to “exploit Stoni and Stephen’s tragic deaths as an excuse to impose new regulations on loving, committed, and law-abiding Michigan families”

“Let’s be clear – this legislation would not have stopped Ms. Blair from killing her children,” Pavlov wrote. “Blair was willing to break every law on the books, and routinely and effectively lied for years to hide her crimes.”"

The legislation reads, in part:

"if a child is being educated at home, the child's parent or legal guardian shall ensure that all of the following are met:

(a) The child meets in person at least twice a year with a physician, licensed social worker, physician's assistant, individual employed in a professional capacity in any office of the friend of the court, school counselor or teacher, audiologist, psychologist, law enforcement officer, marriage and family therapist, member of the clergy, or regulated child care provider.

(b) The parent or legal guardian maintains and makes available upon request records of the meetings required under subdivision(a), including signed documentation from the individual meeting with the child."

Of note: "The real kicker to this whole saga is that inspections wouldn’t have even helped stop this particular tragedy. For example, the mother had already been investigated by the state for child abuse in 2002 and 2005. The state’s response was to refer her to counseling. Disaster was not averted despite her already being on the state’s radar."

"In a 5-1 vote Tuesday, the State of Michigan's Board Of Education declared war on homeschoolers, backing Democrat State Rep. Stephanie Chang's disgusting "homeschool surveillance" legislation.

The board's sole Republican present, Dr. Richard Zeile, spoke out against the resolution and voted against it. The other Republican, Eileen Weiser, was unable to attend due to a family event-she also vigorously opposes the resolution and blasted it in an email to fellow board members.

According to Jacob Kanclerz of MIRS, the State Ed Board supported a statement "that would throw support behind Rep. Chang's bill to create a homeschooled children registry."

SB 422 EXPOSED: No, It's Not "Pro Gun"

Graphic via Bridge
>>>The following is from Tom Lambert at MI Open Carry:

It’s time to lay out why SB 442 is NOT the pro-gun bill some have made it out to be and why nearly every gun group at the state and national levels is opposing the bill. While the bill would allow Michigan CPL holders to concealed carry (CC) in the now Concealed Pistol Free Zones (CPFZs), what it gives in return, how the bill does this, and how the bill is being sold by its proponents are causing many to strongly object.

It Bans Open Carry - The biggest issue with 442 is that it bans Open Carry (OC) in the CPFZs. This is something the state’s most fervent anti-gun legislators have been trying to do for years and now it seems there is someone willing to acquiesce. These opponents of freedom understand that the only thing more dangerous to their cause than a natural, civil, and Constitutionally backed right is the free and public exercise of that right. By pushing gun owners back into the closet they are able to further their sick mantra unchecked that gun owners are scary and dangerous people whose rights only serve as a detriment to the public. Setting a precedent that guns are too scary to be seen is a mistake that will forever haunt us.

If You Think Current Laws Are Confusing, Just Wait - Not only does 442 ban OC, it attempts to do it in a ridiculous manner. 442 amends a portion of the Firearms and Ammunition Act that deals only with CPL holders carrying concealed in specific zones. While many of these zones require a CPL to possess a firearm in in the first place, not all do, thus making OC without a CPL legal. If Senator Green were to succeed in banning Open Carry in these zones for CPL holders we would end up with a situation where OC would be legal until the person gets a CPL. Thus, law-enforcement would be able to detain to make sure the carrier is NOT licensed. In case that left you confused I’ll sum it up this way. OC without license = legal. OC with license = illegal. It doesn’t make sense, but yes that is how it would work.

From Legal to Felony - If you are convicted of breaking the OC ban, the punishments would be as follows: 1st - $500 fine and 6 month license suspension. 2nd - $1,000 fine, 90 day misdemeanor and license revoked. 3rd - $5,000 fine, 4 year felony and license revoked along with ANY ability to own a firearm again. All for doing something that is perfectly legal right now.

Nonresidents Are Screwed - The problems don’t end there. While CC would be legalized, it would only happen after CPL holders apply for, pay for, and are granted an exemption. While the exemption is shall issue, it would only be available to people with a Michigan license and Michigan does not grant licenses to nonresidents. While Michigan residents would still have a legal form of carry, with the added exemption, nonresidents would have zero legal forms left to them.

Insufficient Protection For Printing - While the bill attempts to provide protection for accidental exposure, many have suggested the language is far from adequate. The bill tries to target “intentional display” and “open carry” but does not define them or address “printing”. Even the main organization backing the bill admitted at one point the language should be improved. There are far too many horror stories of anti-gun police and prosecutors using gray areas in our laws to attack gun owners. Even if these people are eventually acquitted, the damage is already done. Pro-gun bills should protect gun owners, not create more loopholes for them to be attacked.

Questionable Tactics - More shocking than the contents of the bill are the tactics being used to support it. As much as it pains me to say it, as the gun community’s opposition has grown so too has the backlash from the seemingly sole group supporting SB 442. While a generally well known pro-gun group in the state, as of late they have engaged in tactics more indicative of one funded by Bloomberg. Dozens of gun owners have been summarily blocked for merely expressing opposition to 442 or less. Those who disagree with 442 or at least want more from the bill have been labeled “extremists” compared to the group’s “compromise”. The bill’s sponsor (Mike Green) and primary cosponsor (Arlan Meekhof), who also happen to be on the group’s board, have made public comments about “closing loopholes” and Open Carry being like “shouting ‘fire’ in a crowded theater", among many others. The group itself has even promoted a message about it not being "in the public interest [...] to advertise our rights." Folks, those who truly seek to support and defend rights do not compare the exercise of those rights to attempts to intentionally harm of others. While the group’s stated goal of more people carrying in more places is admirable, many of their leaders seem to be more concerned lately with the targeting of other gun owners.

While the above list is not exhaustive, it should give readers a general idea of why so many are opposing SB 442. For the stated reasons above and more, SB 442 should be and is being opposed by the gun community. We hope you will join us.

What's The Alternative - We've laid out what we shouldn't be doing, so let's talk now about what we should be doing. Instead of one group going it alone and trying to shove a bad bill down everyone's throat, we should all be working together. There are many bills that would scale back or repeal pistol registration like HB 4675. HB 4795 would help enforce preemption and protect gun owners from local units of government. Both bills are needed reguardless of SB 442 and both bills have been publicly supported by Michigan's gun groups. We at MOC look forward to when the community can come back together and work as a united front again.

If you have any questions or concerns about SB 442, please email lobbying@miopencarry.org

State House: Double Secret Probation Edition

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)
What do you call a State Representative, Senate Majority Leader, former House Minority Leader, and potential Congressional candidate who all walk into a bar?

Roommates.

That’s because it is not at all uncommon for legislators and former lawmakers to shack up together, splitting the living costs of the Lansing life.

That arrangement seems to be the cause of a recent rumor regarding State Rep. Triston Cole.

A highly credible source tells WMP that Cole is part of Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof’s advisory team as he plots a run for Governor in 2018.

Cole tells WMP that’s not true at all, he’s not helping his landlord run for Governor.

“I have never talked with Arlan about running for Governor, Cole said. “Politics is the last thing we talk about at the house, we watch football and stuff like that.”

Landlord? That’s right.

Cole is living with Meekhof, along with former House Majority Leader Kevin Eisenheimer, and fellow State Rep. Peter Pettalia, rumored to be mulling a Congressional run in the First CD...

State Rep. Triston Cole
Picture a legislative frat house-like "Neighbors" minus Zac Efron, Dave Franco, and raging, alcohol induced police showdowns… :)

WMP takes Cole at his word and appreciates his willingness to clear the air. Until evidence changes the situation, though the source is highly credible and has been right multiple times before, the story regarding Cole working as a Meekhof operative for his 2018 Gubernatorial run is unsubstantiated.

Detroit DRAMA: Feds Investigating Emerging Major Duggan Corruption Scandal?!

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)
Looks like drama is abound in "The D."
Charlie LaDeff is at it again, this time, exposing what could prove to be a blockbuster corruption scandal inside the administration of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
LaDeff is focusing on significant irregularities within the city's $100 million blight project. The money is funded through a federal grant, and some contractors tell LaDeff they have been interviewed by federal authorities investigating abuse of the program.
>>>Check it out:
"The city of Detroit has more than $100 million in federal money to bust blight in the city. When Mayor Mike Duggan took office, he promised city residents he would take care of everything.

But the numbers, frankly, don't add up.

Everyone loves a good comeback. Mayor Duggan's office says it's tearing down nasty, decrepit houses in Detroit cheaper and quicker than expected; leading many to think a comeback is coming faster.

Until Charlie LeDuff looked at the numbers.

Charlie submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to check on the blight that the city says it's busting. He wanted the numbers, addresses, costs, etc. and he wanted to compare to previous administrations. He got it, eventually.

First, a spreadsheet that said the city knocked over 3,000 structures in two years. That's no better than Dave Bing.

Then another spreadsheet that said 1,000 structures were torn down but it didn't show the cost.

Finally, a third spreadsheet came in that shows 6,300 structures were torn down. All that one showed about the buildings were the addresses.

Clear as mud.

OK. So how much did it cost to tear down each house? Under Bing, it was $10,000 per home. The first year under Duggan, it was over $13,000. By year two, it was $16,000.

No matter which number is right, it appears Detroit has not torn down any more buildings than they did during the days of Mayor Bing.

We took a look at 50 demolition bids. In more than 20 percent of the time, the contractor who the city judged to be the best and who had also bid the lowest price, didn't get the job. If that seems odd, it's because it is.

Three contractors we talked with said they've had conversations about it with federal authorities.

Either way, demo work in Detroit is happening. However, the city says it has completed 150 per week, which isn't true. At best, it's half that as the price has spiked through the roof.

So Charlie took on City Hall. To get some answers. Well, he tried to get some answers..."

WXYZ also reports of inflated prices for wooden stakes used to mark problematic homes.

"In a post bankrupt Detroit, every dollar counts. That's why when we discovered what seemed to be an unusually high price tag for wooden stakes, we wanted to know why.

The City of Detroit is tearing down thousands of homes in its fight against blight. After the house is knocked down, contractors are now required to use specially made wooden stakes to secure the safety fencing.

Brian Farkas with the Detroit Building Authority says it adds about $60.00 per demo.

In a city that is tearing down thousands of homes, $60.00 per demo adds up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in added cost.

Which company is making them and why?"
Stay tuned...

State Rep. Triston Cole Betrays Conservatives, Holds Weekly Meetings With Meekhof To Plot 2018 Campaign For Governor!

State Rep. Triston Cole

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

>>>VIEW AN UPDATE HERE

State Rep. Triston Cole spits a strong Tea Party game, but sources tell WMP that the freshman legislator is part of a group that holds almost weekly meetings with Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof as he plots out a run for Governor in 2018.

Meekhof is the number one enemy to conservatives in Lansing, so it's pretty sad to see Cole has no problem being a puppet of the Senate Majority Leader as he tries to manipulate his way into the Governor's office.

>>>After all, Meekhof relentlessly pushed Prop 1, a winner for the Senator's campaign bank account but a loser statewide, the biggest defeat for a proposal in Michigan history.

Meekhof was also vital in bringing Obamacare to Michigan, changed Senate rules to hinder public and media access, and backed shady real estate transactions like the MSP building and new #MeekhofSenateBuilding that left taxpayers on the hook for special interest deals...That's just the short version.

How can Cole so eagerly work with Meekhof after smearing Michael Vickory in his primary as not conservative enough!? Wow.

WMP broke the news months ago that Meekhof is planning a run for the state's highest office,

In a story later confirmed by Gongwer, WMP wrote:

"Governor Meekhof?

Prominent Michigan politicos tell WMP State Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof wants to be Governor, and as a result, he is making the moves needed to run in 2018.  Meekhof knows he has a big problem with, among other groups,Conservatives...

Because of that, look for Meekhof to push the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act, and a repeal of Common Core in Michigan. Meekhof is already in active discussions about legislation on those and other issues as well. This is also why he pushed the religious objection adoption bills.

Repealing "prevailing wage" was part of his plan, but Snyder won't sign it and his veto can't be overridden, leaving the fate of that policy in the hands of a citizen's petition drive for now. Meekhof is solidifying his establishment cred-and future campaign donations-by ferociously pushing a road package popular with the Lansing crowd that violates his campaign promise to fight tax increases."

>>>House of Meekhof:Senate Majority Leader Eyes Gubernatorial Run, Will Push RFRA+ Common Core Repeal To Regain Conservative Street Cred

Breaking: CPS Called After State Rep. Investigating Gamrat/Courser Allegedly Chokes Daughter

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com
Plymouth Twp. Police Department documents show an intense argument over loud music and texting caused a prominent legislator to lose his cool with his daughter after she "talked back" to him before school one morning-that's where things get murky.

Weeks after winning the Republican primary for State Representative in the 20th District, Rep. Kurt Heise was the subject of a brief Child Protective Services investigation after a counselor at his daughter's middle school alerted authorities that she may be in danger.

Sources tell WMP that his daughter told the counselor that Heise, a Plymouth area lawyer, tried to choke her during a brief but heated argument before school in October 2010.

Heise is well known as the leading voice for the expulsion of Representatives Cindy Gamrat and Todd Courser. He was on the select committee investigating the lawmakers and voted to expel them after a passionate speech on the House floor.

WMP filed a FOIA request Monday morning with Plymouth Township to get a copy of the police report for the incident, and a partial one was provided later that day. Then today, an email was received containing  the report without redaction after Plymouth officials unexpectedly voted to release it during a meeting last night.

"At a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, September 22, 2015, the Plymouth Township Board of Trustees voted to reverse the partial denial of a document that you requested under the Freedom of Information Act," said Plymouth Twp. Deputy Clerk Michelle Lozier in an email to WMP.

WMP had not yet asked for the uncensored report, the Plymouth Twp. Board of Trustees vote was held without any known request.

According to the report filed by Plymouth Twp. Police Officer Jason Hayes, Rep. Heise was upset with one of his daughters listening to music and texting instead of getting ready for school and told her to stop. The daughter subsequently complied but was argumentative and talking back. This caused Heise to get heated with her and he "poked her in the shoulder with two fingers" while yelling aggressively, "sternly."

The report says the daughter merely wanted to vent to the counselor and thought the whole thing was overblown. However, sources tell WMP that the daughter originally said Heise aggressively choked her during the dispute and that she was quite scared. This caused the counselor to disregard's Heise's status as incoming State Rep. and go to authorities with concerns.

No charges were filed after police and CPS investigators said the Heise house seemed to be "safe and normal."

He has recently said voters shouldn't even get a chance to decide Gamrat's fate and she should not be allowed on the ballot.

From MLive:

"Rep. Kurt Heise, an attorney who sat on the special committee that recommended expulsion for Gamrat and fellow Rep. Todd Courser, said Tuesday that the SOS determination is not binding and should be tested in court.

"I don't have standing to do anything, but if I were a candidate in that race right now, I would be on the road to Lansing, I would hire an election law expert, and I would file a lawsuit right now" in Circuit Court or the Court of Claims, he said...

Heise believes that the Michigan House, by expelling Gamrat, voted to exclude her for the duration of her two-year term, which runs through 2016. The Michigan Constitution holds that the House is the sole arbiter of a lawmaker's qualification to remain in office.

"She does not have the legal right to put her name back on the ballot," Heise, R-Plymouth Township, argued. "That undermines the legislative intent, it undermines the constitutional intent behind all of this and it's illegal. I think one of those candidates needs to take the initiative and do it."

>>>According to his bio, Heise is the Chairman of the House Criminal Justice Committee. He is married to Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Catherine Heise, recently appointed by Gov. Snyder to fill a vacancy.

"Kurt Heise is the State Representative for the 20th House District, comprising the City of Northville, Northville Township, the City of Plymouth, Plymouth Township, and eastern Canton.

Born in 1966 in Dearborn, Heise and his wife, Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Catherine Heise, reside in Plymouth Township with their children Kate and Claire. Both daughters are high school students in the Plymouth-Canton Public Schools.

Active in his community, Heise is a Trustee on the Plymouth-Canton Schools’ Educational Excellence Foundation, and is a member of the Plymouth Rotary Club, Plymouth and Northville Chambers of Commerce, and other civic organizations.

Now in his third term, Heise again serves as Chairman of the House Criminal Justice Committee. He also serves on the House Judiciary, Elections & Ethics, and Local Government committees.

Heise graduated from the Dearborn Public Schools in 1984 and the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1988. He then earned a Juris Doctorate and a Masters of Law in Labor Law from Wayne State University Law School in 1991 and 1993. He was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1991 and is licensed to practice in the Federal District Court in Detroit and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals."
