When It Mattered The Most, Paul Mitchell Fought The Lansing Status Quo As Pavlov Sat Silent

By Brandon Hall

Growing up in the infamous, hard-nosed Southie projects of Boston with six siblings and parents who worked multiple jobs to keep food on the table, Mitchell is no stranger to working hard and getting things done.

Mitchell worked his way to Michigan State University, eventually graduating, working for Chrysler, then becoming a top leader at Ross Education. He would eventually become CEO at Ross.

Most political junkies first heard of Mitchell in fall of 2013 when he launched ads against Gary Peters through his "Pure PAC." Soon after, he announced he was running for Congress when Dave Camp said he was retiring.

That 2014 campaign didn't pan out.

But in early 2015, when Lansing power brokers tried to screw over the people and pass the largest tax increase in over 50 years, Mitchell stepped up to the plate immediately, putting his money, time, and talent into opposing what was known as "Prop 1."

As others have alluded to, if the horrendous Prop 1 campaign were a horror movie, spoiler alert: Paul Mitchell is the "killer."

Mitchell, a retired businessman, led the campaign to defeat Prop 1 and was extremely successful.  His group, "Say No To Higher Taxes And Special Interest Deals," was the primary source of resistance to millions spent by Lansing power brokers and establishment hacks trying to get rich off the taxpayer's dime.

Mitchell defined the narrative from the beginning, using the press and social media immensely effectively to promulgate his anti-Prop 1 messaging strategy.

Mitchell also showed his strategic acumen when he hired veteran political hands Scott Hagerstrom of AFP, former Ottawa GOP Executive Director Faith Steketee, and Randall Thompson, now Chair of the Faith and Freedom Coalition. All are pros and were critical to the success of Mitchell's team.

Mitchell and his team engaged grassroots leaders across the state, made a myriad of media appearances, spoke at dozens of events, held a rally at the Capitol, operated phone banks, led email campaigns, helped with letters to the editor, and even held debates against Prop 1 proponents, among other things.

At the Michigan Republican Convention in February, Mitchell even challenged Meekhof to a debate after Meekhof rudely interrupted him and accused him of lying about the controversial proposal. Meekhof refused....

Mitchell's leadership was crucial in beating the Lansing machine by a record 60 point margin, 80%-20%, the biggest defeat for a proposal in Michigan history.

Now Mitchell wants to take those conservative values to Washington D.C., announcing in a press release last summer he is running for Congress to replace a retiring Candice Miller in Michigan's 10th Congressional District.

In an interview with WMP before Prop 1, Mitchell said he learned a lot from his previous Congressional campaign, and Prop 1 proved Mitchell correct.
""Losing kind of sucks," Mitchell told WMP when asked what he learned because of his heated Congressional race against now Congressman John Moolenaar.

"I learned how difficult it is to overcome the power of the political establishment. We didn't 'feel their wrath,' but we definitely did not get the support... The campaign taught me some things about how to communicate issues better."

As Mitchell was fighting Prop 1, his opponents didn't seem to be doing much to fight the biggest tax increase in decades. In fact, Pavlov was helping Arlan Meekhof carry out his horrendous agenda in Lansing!

It's fitting that the 10th will elect Mitchell August 2nd and in November. Donald Trump won the district with 47% of the vote in March and Mitchell has many of the same qualities, self-funding, straight-talking, and not scared of a fight, though much more diplomatic than Mr. Trump...

There's simply no doubt: Paul Mitchell will be an amazing asset to the Congressional Delegation.

Hornberger Dubbed "Common Core Pam" As Shmina Hopes For Major Win In Controversial 32nd District Battle

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

Pam Hornberger is generating controversy in the 32nd District Republican State House primary battle that could see Michael Shmina prevailing...

Hornberger is under fire for refusing to pledge her support to fighting "Common Core," taking nearly $10,000 in donations from the DeVos family, and claiming to be oblivious of support from a prominent DeVos funded organization until someone else told her....

Some local GOP activists have even dubbed her "Common Core Pam."

Small business owner Michael Shmina is hoping to upset the status quo and prevail over Hornberger in the primary battle that also features Justin Tranchita, an unconventional and controversial candidate known for performing Ben Carson's campaign theme song.

>>>According to reports from Karen Braun of "Stop Common Core In Michigan":

"In short, GLEP is a strong supporter of the Common Core and its continued implementation in Michigan. They are part of the Michigan Coalition for High Student Standards which opposes SB 826 to Repeal and Replace Common Core, science, social studies, and aligned assessments with pre-common core Massachusetts standards. Stop Common Core in Michigan believes there is a high correlation between candidates who accept the GLEP endorsement and their future votes on legislation.

Like Bill Gates, Betsy DeVos has some money and has some things she’d like to see different. Like all good investors, DeVos likely expects a return on her investment. And if you don’t play the game under their rules and vote the way you want her to vote, you may find yourself challenged the next time you run for office. As the Detroit News states there is “independent spending supporting or opposingparticular candidates. ” (emphasis added)

In practical terms, what does that support or opposition look like? Here’s a photo of the mailers sent to me by a constituent in the 32nd State House in Macomb County. It is a three-way race between Hornberger, Shmina, and Tranchita. Shmina and Tranchita have signed the Stop Common Core pledge, Hornberger has refused to sign it. She has received the GLEP endorsement and at least $9,000 in DeVos family donations according to Hornberger’s Late Contributions Report.

I asked Hornberger about the support of GLEP on her Hornberger for State Representative FB page.

She said, "GLEP donated $250 to my campaign. GLEP sent mailers in support of me to conservative voters in our 32nd District. Again, they have confidence in my ability be a competent servant leader for the 32nd, regardless of the fact that we disagree on certain issues. I had no knowledge of the support mailings by GLEP until I receive them in the mail. They are a surprise to me. “

Calley Blasts Clinton Over Flint Claims

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley blasted Democrat Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for pushing out a false narrative at the DNC in Philly regarding her alleged role in helping Flint during the city's water crisis.

According to MLive:

"Lt. Gov. Brian Calley wasn't entirely displeased with the way Michigan was portrayed at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, but he took significant issue with the implication that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was a catalyst for change in Flint.
A video produced for the convention on the Flint water crisis that preceded Flint Mayor Karen Weaver's speech Wednesday "had the timeline all messed up" on when changes started being addressed in the city, Calley told reporters following a town hall event for Republican vice presidential pick Mike Pence in Grand Rapids Thursday.
"Hillary Clinton was late to the game — she wasn't what drove the process," said Calley, a Republican. "It was a very disappointing distortion — a flat-out lie, in fact — to suggest that Hillary Clinton bringing up Flint water was what caused the actions to be taken Calley specifically pointed out that the switchover back to the Detroit water system happened "months before Hillary Clinton had ever said anything."

Calley specifically pointed out that the switchover back to the Detroit water system happened "months before Hillary Clinton had ever said anything."
Anna Heaton, spokesperson for Gov. Rick Snyder, was also critical of the video following its release on the national stage. She said suggesting that the state isn't contributing to the city's full recovery "is a false narrative and won't sit well with the taxpayers of Michigan."

Mailers Hit Pavlov For Shady Senate Building Deal In MI-10

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

A shocking, scandalous report from WXYZ in Detroit revealed last year that the State of Michigan is grossly overpaying for a new Senate Building that has disgusted Michiganders as the state scrapes together money for roads and other essential services while gas taxes and vehicle registration fees continue to go up.
MIRS has revealed the total cost of the new Senate Building will be over $130 million dollars when it’s all said and done… No assessment was done for a deal that lines the pockets of a major GOP donor, and many Michiganders are upset after revelations the state paid millions more than what it’s worth.
The reason for the new office? So that Senators have a better view of the capital building!
State Senator Phil Pavlov didn’t say or do anything to stop that deal, which has now appeared as an issue in a mailer in his race against Paul Mitchell for Congress in Michigan’s 10th District.
So what happened with that shady building deal? WXYZ says:
“The Michigan Senate drastically overpaid for new office space purchased from a politically-connected developer, according to Lansing’s assessor of record. William Fowler told Channel 7’s Ross Jones that the $41 million purchase price isn’t supported by the current real estate market in downtown Lansing.
“Based on everything you know, is this building anywhere near worth $41 million?” asked Channel 7’s Ross Jones.
“Not in today’s market,” Fowler said, calling the sales price “three times greater than anything that has sold downtown of comparable use.”
Fowler says that his office currently has Capitol View assessed at about $12 million, a figure he says is closer to what it’s actually worth.  Were it to be built brand new today, his office estimates it would cost just under $22 million.
Fowler says his office won’t use Capitol View’s sale price as a benchmark for assessing other properties downtown.
The building has been dubbed the “Capitol View boondoggle” by Democratic lawmakers, and even though the project was pushed through by Republicans leadership, even many Republicans have a hard time defending the purchase.
“I don’t think anybody’s excited about it,” said Rep. Al Pscholka (R-Stevensville). “I don’t think anybody likes it.”
But like it or not, barring some last-minute maneuver, Michigan taxpayers will be on the hook to pay for all of it: $41 million for the building, as much $10 million to fix it up and, when you add on 30-years of interest, a total cost of about $134 million.
Sen. Arlen Meekhof (R-West Olive) is the Senate Majority Leader in Lansing today. He wasn’t in charge when the Senate made the deal to buy Capitol View last year, but he did support it. When we visited his offices last month, he wouldn’t talk to us about Capitol View. Instead, his office sent out Meekhof’s spokeswoman, Amber McCann.
“(The assessor) said that the $41 million is substantially higher than he thinks the building is actually worth,” Jones told McCann. “Okay,” McCann replied.
“Does that trouble you at all?” Jones asked. “I’m not troubled by his opinion, he’s entitled to his opinion,” McCann said. “But doesn’t that make you feel like you maybe should have gotten that appraisal?” Jones asked. “At this point, I don’t feel like an appraisal was necessary,” she replied.”
Stay tuned!

Norlander Responds To WMP Article Over Salary Scandal+Other Issues

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

After a WMP report detailing multiple issues with Calhoun County Clerk Ann Norlander, she responded in a statement to WMP.

She says a local group is trying to make her life "hell."

"The salary discussion has been totally taken out of context," Norlander tells WMP. "Matt Davis, Steve Frisbie , Richard Lindsey and Diane Kirkham have tried to make my life a living hell for the last two years. I am being punished for doing the right thing by keeping Matt Davis off the ballot when he bounced his $100.00 filing fee check and for endorsing Sarah Lincoln for Circuit Court judge."

>>>Here is Norlander's Full Statement:

"These issues were all covered during the extensive Audit called for by Our Administrator, Kelli Scott. I was interviewed for 2 hours and the result of the Audit proved no Fraud or misappropriation of tax dollars.

The salary discussion has been totally taken out of context. Matt Davis, Steve Frisbie , Richard Lindsey and Diane Kirkham have tried to make my life a living hell for the last two years. I am being punished for doing the right thing by keeping Matt Davis off the ballot when he bounced his $100.00 filing fee check and for endorsing Sarah Lincoln for Circuit Court judge.

I sincerely hope as you read this that you will understand that this group is attempting to smear me and ruin my reputation to further their agenda of revenge and vengeance on the eve of the primary election. The truth is: I have done nothing wrong. And the truth will prevail. I ask for your continued support and your vote on August 2nd. I will continue to take the high road."

-Anne Norlander"
