A bill recently introduced by Speaker Pro Tem Lee Chatfield would repeal the requirement for Michiganders to register pistols with the State.
According to a statement, Chatfield says the legislation would put Michigan in the same category as 44 other states.
"Owning a firearm is a constitutional right for self-defense," Chatfield said. "That's why I introduced legislation today that would eliminate the mandate to register your pistol with the state. It also allows individuals who were previously required to register the option to remove their information from the database.
Only six states require all pistols be registered. This bill would bring us in line with the laws in 44 other states. There is no need for the government to have an exhaustive registry of our firearms."Chatfield received rave reviews for the bill at a 2nd Amendment rally in front of the Capitol last week. The legislation is expected to pass out of the House, what will happen in Meekhof's Senate remains to be seen...
