Most Michiganders are dreading Wednesday this week, "Tax Day," the deadline to square up with the IRS on taxes.
In Zeeland, Congressman Bill Huizenga faces a different deadline: Tuesday is the last day he can explain campaign finance law discrepancies to the Michigan Secretary of State's office.
Rep. Bill Huizenga |
Huizenga says $900 from his "Huizenga House Fund" was given to Holly Hughes in 2008, but her records don't show she ever received it. Subsequently, the $900 never reappears in Huizenga's coffers...
According to my phone call today with Secretary of State officials, if Huizenga can't account for what happened to the $900 by the April 14th deadline, the Secretary of State will send the case to Attorney General Bill Schuette's office for a full investigation.
Huizenga recently filed an affidavit under penalty of perjury swearing problems with his PAC campaign account were accidental oversights.
Until a complaint was filed in early January, Huizenga failed to file 14 reports, some as old as 10 years, between 2004-2009. He also failed to identify 6 contributors who donated $14,000 to his PAC.
