Tom Leonard Leads MIGOP State Chair Buzz (And 7 Other Possible Candidates You Need To Know)

Speaker Tom Leonard leads the early buzz for possible candidates for Michigan Republican Party Chair.

Dozens of grassroots activists expressed support for Leonard to replace retiring Chair Ron Weiser on social media over the weekend, and in a poll of one Congressional District, every single member chose Leonard.  A Facebook group was also created to “Draft Tom Leonard” for MIGOP Chair.

In a statement Sunday evening, Leonard said he is considering running, and he will make an announcement soon.

"I want to thank all of the people who have been urging me to run for Michigan GOP Chairman," Leonard said. "It has truly been heartening, especially after coming off such a close race for attorney general. I have been blessed beyond anything I can put into words. I want you to know that I am seriously considering it, and will make a decision shortly."

His top priority would be re-electing President Trump in 2020. Leonard also wants the grassroots to have more of a voice.

My top priority as Chairman would be the re-election of President Donald J. Trump," Leonard said. "I also want to see a unified party. We won Michigan for our President in 2016, and we will win it again in 2020 by putting together a united team of grassroots activists."

Many have speculated who Leonard would choose as his Vice Chair. While testing a few website combinations, it was interesting to see that LeonardMaddock.com has been purchased.

Possible MIGOP Vice Chair candidate Meshawn Maddock
Leonard would enter the race as the front runner, but he isn’t the only name  being mentioned.

Here are 7 other potential candidates for MIGOP Chair:

Scott Greenlee is a party veteran, as well as a political consultant and strategist who recently ran the campaign against legalizing marijuana, “Healthy and Productive Michigan.”

John Inhulsen is a former Chair of the Kent County GOP and one of West Michigan’s top lawyers.

Dave Dishaw is a former state committee member and Kent County GOP Chair known for his data analysis skills. He is an expert on the party’s rules, and has been involved in party politics at all levels for decades.

Laura Cox is a State Representative  from Wayne County.

Stan Grot is the 10th District Chair and Shelby Township Clerk.

Norm Hughes is a grassroots activist and President of the Michigan Conservative Union. He was defeated for the position in 2015 by Ronna Romney McDaniel.

Lena Epstein is a small business owner and was a co-chair for President Trump’s 2016 Michigan campaign.

  1. Tom is by far the most talented name on this list. Not really close. Can raise money, knows the legislative spots that need to be filled in 2020, is a strong face-to-face campaigner, and is for Trump. Go Tom.

  2. Laura Cox is the best name on this list. Can raise money. Can articulate our message to the state. Can manage the staff. And lets be honest here: Having a woman in charge worked out great for us last time with Ronna!

My issue with Tom Leonard is his time as Speaker of the House. Where is our lower state income tax rate? Where is our lower car insurance rates? Among other issues.

  3. Norm Hughes has the most political knowledge, the most serious and detailed approach to analyzing important issues and a huge amount of gravitas to offer the conservative movement, and Norm Hughes has the least potential for caving in on conservatism, or cashing in on special favors or carrying the water for lobbyists. Norm Hughes is the real conservative deal, who (hands down) should be chosen as the next MRP Chairman.

  4. I fully blame the MiGOP for Whitmer and Stabenow along with a few local representatives that won the mid terms. What a leaderless group, no viable strategy or platform or message, no ability to unite independents with conservatives and even moderate Dems. Absolutely no power over the candidates and there should be some ability to stop all their “it’s all about me” BS! And complete failure on the proposals! John James never should have been defeated! Schuette never should have been the best we had to offer. And Schuette announcing the week before the election he wasn’t spending $500k in ads was his death knell, why vote for someone who wouldn’t fight for himself let alone us? Total screwed up organization! And Snyder sitting on the sidelines? Shame on Snyder. Where was the party leadership to mitigate the Flint-hate against Snyder and promote all the good economic work he did for Michigan for 8 years? And who the hell pissed off Trump so he wouldn’t rally here??! I could go on but what’s the use. You just don’t get it. Michigan may (probably will) never vote red again because of your utter incompetence. And with that you can kiss a second Trump term goodbye.

  5. Well ... my political "friends" ... I'm SO disappointed in Leonard. He personally had the opportunity as Speaker of the House to bring on the pot issue for a vote in the legislature.
He chose to push it aside in exchange to look good in his next campaign.
He ... single handedly ... traded fewer dems at the poles for his own political strategy. And the gamble ... LOST.
How does one just, "move on" after something like that?
I am sorry to alienate many political associates, but ... when does a candidate become responsible for actions that affect the masses?
When does ANY politician simply say ... "Yeah ... THAT was what I did."?

  6. I support Meshawn Maddock & know she would make a fine representative of the Grass Roots Constitutional Christian Conservatives that will emerge as the true Republican party.

  7. Leonard already pulled his name out of the race. No doubt after the party bosses took him behind closed doors.

Looks like its gonna be another handpicked stooge, as usual.

  8. I have to say I absolutely loved going to this place the other night. The people that work at event space Atlanta here were trying to create an optimal dinner experience while making your choices their priority. I would definitely recommend this venue for any kind of fancy event.
