Senator Debbie Stabenow partially blocked access to Lake Michigan at Grand Haven State Park during a protest Monday morning.
The event was hosted by "All Hands On Deck," a group dedicated to raising awareness about protecting the Great Lakes.
Stabenow, along with dozens of other protesters, held hands and blocked access to a portion of the lake as another protester sang tribal music while beating a drum.
The area of the protest was near where Grand Haven City Beach and the State Park converge...
In comments after the event, Stabenow said she felt it was important to attend because of what was happening with President Trump in Washington DC.
One of the group's top issues is President Trump's proposed cuts to the Great Lakes Restoration Fund.

ReplyDeleteIf the programs being cut were actually doing what is needed, they wouldn't be cut. Instead, they have turned into just a slush fund for every "connected" group. There is no benefit to the lakes from a large amount of the dollars spent.

DeletePlease announce in advance the next time you plan this kind of protest in my area so I can go there and walk right through your linked arms! You don't have a RIGHT to block access to public areas.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a line of people on the beach trying to decide whether to get in the water. The Indian chant means what? No signs or posters, so how do you know that they are protesting against anything? Looks poorly thought out to me. Typical democratic protesting you don't know what they are protesting.

DeleteRestoration of the Great Lakes is a regional issue not a national issue. If Stabenow and the other protestors are so het up with restoring the Great Lakes then find local funds to do it with.

ReplyDeleteSo you're saying that when CITIZENS pollute an area, it is the responsibility of the GOVERNMENT to clean it up? Sounds to me as if you're saying citizens are a bunch of babies who need the government to change their diapers. Why not expect grown adults to be accountable for cleaning up their own mess? Hold the ones responsible for polluting accountable for cleaning up their pollution. Or is that too much like responsible adult (Republican) thinking?
ReplyDeleteI love the Lake Michigan side in Michigan. It is a beautiful beach. Just because some people don't care about clean water for the beaches and for drinking, like the Donald, doesn't mean we should stop protecting our natural resources. He is really insane.
ReplyDeleteIf you love it so much, raise local funds to pay for it. Put it on the ballot to raise YOUR property taxes and leave the rest of the country out of it. And clean up Dearborn and Detroit while you're at it

ReplyDeleteWhen a public official denies the rights of the public at a public place, he/she is NOT representing. Denying my right to go in the water or interfering with my kids right to have fun, playing in the water, you're not protesting, you're being a asshole....
ReplyDeleteHow many jobs will be lost because of their protest. How many will not return again. How many saved for a vacation all year? They could not even gain access to the beach. Go protest in
ReplyDeleteD. C., or a courthouse or Lansing or anywhere else. It was a mean spirited thing to do to vacationers. Instead of creating jobs, your responsible for destroying jobs. We should always put humans first. Where is The golden rule in this.Even if it's politics. Then I say yes, protect our lakes! Save your energy for more present, pressing issues. Make sure AHCA includes medicaid for the people that caretakers are caring for. Make sure the 43.5 million caregivers have resources to keep their loved ones at home. This saves everyone money, because most caregivers are volunteers. Keeping people at home not, Institutions which would cost the government more. Thousands are dying yearly from mental illness. Build some psychiatric hospitals! Work on decriminalization of mental illness. #abedinstead

Wow. Repubs delicate feelings clearly hurt by this. Did anyone actually try to access Lake Michigan while this was taking place? Probably not, as that would require getting up off the couch, and venturing out into the real world. Snowflakes don't roll that way.
ReplyDeleteLudington received over $300,000 from the state for a "west end development" that most people -- including those visiting from out of town--do not want.
ReplyDeleteMaybe that money would be better spent on protecting Lake Michigan and the natural dune area at Stearns Park!!
I wouldn't worry about the funds being cut. NOAA is trying to make a marine sanctuary out of the whole thing. Tax payer funded.
ReplyDeletewe pay every time we go to a State Park, with your state park tab you can add to the price of your plate, or daily passes or you can even buy a yearly pass at the state parks....its the people that manage the money you spend on these passes that are not managing properly to clean up such thing...such as the gas tax for roads..........people like Debbie need to be voted out and get responsible people in
