Representative Candice Miller may only have a few months left in Congress, but she's using that time on a valuable cause: working with fellow Michigander Dave Trott to prevent a lame duck vote on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, also known as TPP and Obamatrade. The legislation is kept secret from the American people, and has only been available to legislators in a secret room where they pledge confidentiality under threat of arrest. WikiLeaks has released parts of it though, and they are immensely disturbing...
According to The Hill:
"Six House Republicans are calling on President Obama to forgo a congressional vote on a Pacific Rim trade deal before he leaves office.
Michigan Reps. Candice Miller and Dave Trott spearheaded a letter this week to the president arguing that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) has raised too many concerns for Congress to take a vote after the November election.
“A lame-duck Congress should not vote on an agreement of this consequence, it would be an end-run around the American people immediately following an election,” the House members wrote.
“We urge you not to send TPP implementing legislation to Congress in 2016," they said.
Bill Shuster (Pa.), Tim Murphy (Pa.), Ed Whitfield (Ky.) and Ted Yoho (Fla.) also signed on to the letter."
The Hill notes "All six voted for trade promotion authority last summer that would fast-track the TPP or any other trade deal through Congress without amendments," so thankfully they have come around! :)

ReplyDeleteAhem. The full text of the TPP was released when the Agreement was signed late 2015. It is available at the TPP repository, and other places. https://www.tpp.mfat.govt.nz/text
