Bangor is more than just a stop on the Amtrak trek to Chicago, it's a real town with real people. And a real government, which finds itself short half a million dollars under immensely shady circumstances.
According to some great reporting from WOOD TV 8, the new Mayor, who took office in 2013, discovered the $500,000 discrepancy and subsequently, phoned the FBI.
"After finding $500,000 seemed to be missing from the City of Bangor’s accounts, the mayor of the small city in Van Buren County called in the FBI.
Nick Householder has been trying to get the Bangor’s finances in order since he became mayor in 2013.
Annual city audit reports from 2007 to 2012 show a pattern of “control deficiencies.” Some $500,000 seems to have vanished from city funds during that time.
One audit shows that the general fund fell from more than $330,000 in 2006 to $74,000 in 2007. Similar drop-offs were found in the city’s water and sewer budget. Householder said there is no paper trail to show where the money went."
Wow. Stay tuned...
