Former Chairman Of "Non-Profit" Involved In Controversial $25 Million Clare Health Park Grant Donated Thousands To Kunse And Wentworth

John Gross, the former Chairman of the Board of Directors for the controversial non-profit involving State Rep. Tom Kunse, Former Speaker Jason Wentworth, former Wentworth staffer David Coker, and Chicago conman Anthony Demasi, is a major donor to both Kunse and Wentworth.

Kunse, Coker, and Wentworth are longtime friends.

A $25 million state grant for a health complex in Clare known as "Clare Health Park" was secured in the 2022 budget by Speaker Wentworth, and soon after, awarded to his former staffer David Coker's non-profit.

State Rep. Tom Kunse who was hand-picked by Wentworth to replace him in the House then pocketed $3.5 million in a real estate deal from the grant.

After winning the project, Coker enlisted Anthony Demasi, who is now serving his 2nd stint in federal prison, to help run things.

The State Of Michigan halted payments on the sketchy ordeal, which is now under investigation by the Attorney General and the Michigan State Police. No decision on possible criminal charges has been announced.

According to Bridge Michigan:

“Coker told Bridge he relinquished control of the nonprofit to a three-person board of directors, chaired by local pharmacy owner John Gross, which then hired another Coker firm, IW Consulting LLC, as project manager to oversee the health campus.

"There's not one guy... that's going to be pulling  $500,000 a year off this as (nonprofit) owner or manager or anything else," Coker said. "We have an unpaid board, and that's how it will (remain). This is 100 percent about doing something to improve (health) issues in the area."

Gross eventually resigned as Chairman and the Board completely.

“The application to MDHHS from Complete Health Park lists a project start date last December and an end date of this fall with a project cost of $25,000,000.

It lists Anthony Demasi, (with a Mt. Pleasant address) as the Program Director; Dave Coker (with a Clare address) as Director; and Shannon Taylor (also of Clare) as Financial Officer. Demasi was taken off the project in February, after federal charges for fraud were filed against him.

Another Board Member – John Gross – resigned after concerns about the project were raised, an article in the Detroit News said.”

Gross is a major donor to Kunse and Wentworth, giving $3,000 between the two since 2019:

John Gross, meeting with former Speaker Jason Wentworth:

As for Kunse, whose district includes Osceola and Mecosta Counties, as well as parts of Clare County and Lake County, he is up for re-election in August.

The filing deadline is April 23rd...

🚨BREAKING: Is Whitmer Appointed Judge Victoria Shackelford Under FBI Investigation Over Crooked Real Estate Deals?🚨

 By Brandon Hall

(Email him at WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

---UPDATED---4/18/24---1:49 PM---

In an emailed statement to West Michigan Politics, Judge Victoria Shackelford produced a letter dated April 12th from the Assistant US Attorneys in the Eastern District, Frances Lee Carlson, and Robert Moran.

"Dear Judge Shackelford:

Please be advised that you are not presently, nor have you previously been, the target of an investigation conducted in this district relating to, in general terms, public officials in the City of Taylor corruptly receiving benefits from Shady Awad and others."

_________________________________________________________________________

Blockbuster court documents obtained exclusively by West Michigan Politics show Judge Victoria Shackelford, who was appointed  to the bench by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2021, bought a $180,000 house for just $130,000---then demanded $15,000 in free home improvements.

Judge Shackelford even wrote a check for a lot adjacent to the property, but had the check returned back to her---uncashed.

Shackelford, a former Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor, is the Chief Judge of the 23rd District Court.

After extensive rumination, though it is *technically* public information and very much news worthy, West Michigan Politics won't identify the address---nor publish photos of Judge Shackelford's home---because of (obvious) safety precautions, as the Judge is married with 3 children.

Judge Victoria Shackelford

Shackelford needed to live in the City of Taylor in order to get the appointment from Governor Whitmer ahead of the retirement of Judge Geno Salamone.

A source tells West Michigan Politics that Judge Shackelford is now under FBI investigation over the sketchy real estate deals. However, a letter from federal prosecutors to her says that Shackelford has "not presently, nor have you previously been, the target of an investigation conducted in this district relating to, in general terms, public officials in the City of Taylor corruptly receiving benefits from Shady Awad and others."

(West Michigan Politics has a history of breaking stories involving federal investigations, including Rick Johnson, and Mike Mitchell.)

The bombshell revelations about Judge Shackelford come from hundreds of pages of Shady Awad's testimony in the court case involving former Taylor Mayor Rick Sollars

Yes, his real name is Shady, which is just fantastic---and ironically, his testimony is extremely credible. His sentencing depends on it! After personally reviewing hundreds of pages of it, this guy is no "jailhouse snitch," he is the real deal.

Shady is a real estate developer who essentially agreed to buy crappy homes from the City Of Taylor and repair them in exchange for being awarded ownership of them. He had over 100 homes in Taylor.

The plan was for Shady to profit while the City Of Taylor would make money off increased property taxes the buyers would then be paying.

Shady Awad

Shackelford wasn't the only beneficiary: Sollars asked Shady that one of the houses be given to Taylor baseball star Steve Avery, and others.

Shady testified that he gave Shackelford the discounted house and did other favors for Sollars to keep from being harassed by City officials...

That included a humidor and Cubans for his Mayoral office, thousands in cash bribes--- including one Sollars picked up at a dispensary that "smelled like weed"---and Vegas trips featuring uncollected gambling "loans," and free hookers for Sollars.

Vegas hookers, and Rick Sollars

This is a breaking story with more details coming soon---stay tuned to West Michigan Politics for more details!

FLIP FLOP: Shady State Rep. Tom Kunse Originally Supported Horrendous Chinese Gotion Project In Big Rapids

State Rep. Tom Kunse speaks at a meeting about Gotion

By Brandon Hall

(Email him at WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

Controversial State Rep. Tom Kunse was originally a strong supporter of the horrendous Gotion project in Big Rapids being pushed by the Chinese Communist Party.

Kunse apparently changed his tune only after community members were absolutely FURIOUS over the plans...

Kunse is currently under fire for an extremely suspicious $3.5 million real estate deal he received from a state grant that has now been terminated, and is under investigation by the Attorney General, as well as the Michigan State Police.

The $25 million state grant was secured by Kunse's friend and the man he replaced in the State House, former Speaker Jason Wentworth.

The grant was awarded to Wentworth's former staffer, David Coker, who then paid Kunse $3.5 million.

Coker and Wentworth are friends of Kunse, and they have both donated to his campaign, with Wentworth giving nearly $20,000!

In an April 2023 interview on "Off The Record," Kunse himself admitted he flip-flopped on the horrendous CCP backed Gotion invasion:

Why the hell would you ever support something like this in the first place?!

As for Kunse, whose district includes Osceola and Mecosta Counties, as well as parts of Clare County and Lake County, he is up for re-election in August.

The filing deadline is April 23rd...

Controversial State Rep. Tom Kunse Was "Hand Picked" By Speaker Jason Wentworth To Replace Him In The State House

Wentworth, left, Kunse, right

By Brandon Hall

(Email him at WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

State Rep. Tom Kunse was hand-picked by controversial former House Speaker Jason Wentworth to replace him in the State House in 2022.

Wentworth endorsed Kunse, and then gave $15,00 to his campaign.

Wentworth even gave $2,500 to Kunse's leadership PAC after the election.

Wentworth and Kunse's friendship goes back many years.

Wentworth endorsed Kunse for Grant Township Trustee in 2020, also backing another friend involved in Kunse's shady $3.5 million real estate deal scandal---David Coker---for Clare County Road Commission:

David Coker was a Wentworth staffer who resigned in 2021 in an attempt to win a $25 million state grant Wentworth helped secure in the 2022 state budget for a health and fitness facility in Clare.

Coker won the grant, then bought $3.5 million in land from Wentworth's friend, the man the former Speaker hand-picked to replace him in the State House, State Rep. Tom Kunse.

Coker also enlisted Chicago conman Anthony Demasi, who was just sentenced to his 2nd stint in federal prison for an unrelated scam a couple weeks ago, to help run the project.

The state has stopped payments on the sketchy operation, and the whole situation is now under investigation by Attorney General Dana Nessel and the Michigan State Police.

As for Kunse, whose district includes Osceola and Mecosta Counties, as well as parts of Clare County and Lake County, he is up for re-election in August.

The filing deadline is April 23rd...

State Rep. Tom Kunse's Connections to David Coker And Anthony Demasi Raise Red Flags Amid Shady $3.5 Million Real Estate Deal

Kunse, Coker, and Demasi

By Brandon Hall

(Email him at WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

State Representative Tom Kunse's connections to Anthony Demasi and David Coker (as well as the trio's relationship with former Michigan House Speaker Jason Wentworth) have raised major red flags as questions about the controversial $25 million state grant for Clare Health Park---including Kunse's shady $3.5 million land deal---remain unanswered.

The grant has been stopped, and the project is now under investigation.

Both David Coker and Anthony Demasi are donors to State Rep. Tom Kunse.

Demasi hasn’t made any other legal political donations to anyone else---aside from the $1,050 to Kunse in April of 2021:

Coker gave Kunse $100 the same week, and has also donated $10 to Jason Wentworth:

David Coker

David Coker is the ex-Legislative Director for former Speaker Of The House Jason Wentworth.

Coker is currently a Clare County Road Commissioner,

and leads the Clare Chamber Of Commerce.

He used to be a Surrey Township Trustee.

Coker left Wentworth’s office in 2021 to form his non-profit,

and pursue the Clare Health Park project grant.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services subsequently awarded Coker’s non-profit the $25 million grant, which Wentworth fought to include in the budget, in 2022.

Soon after, Coker’s non-profit purchased a $3.5 million property from Speaker Wentworth’s friend---the man who would replace him in January 2023 as State Representative---Tom Kunse! Wentworth has strongly supported Kunse for years...

Coker’s organization then awarded Coker’s own consulting firm, IW Consulting, a lucrative six figure deal reportedly worth nearly $900,000!

Right when you don’t think it can get any dirtier, Coker hired former Chicago con man Anthony Demasi, a character straight out of “The Sopranos,” to lead the construction campaign as the Project Manager!

Here are more relevant excerpts on Coker from the Bridge Michigan investigation:

Who Is Anthony Demasi?

Anthony Demasi was indicted in federal court in

January of 2023 for an identity theft scheme,

the day before the Clare Health Park grant was approved.

Demasi, owner of a financial firm and a Professor

at Mid-Michigan Community College at the time,

was caught trying to take out credit cards from

3 different banks using the IDs of 3 different people,

without their consent, in Isabella County.

The victims Demasi targeted were his own interns

and employees.

He was formally charged with 3 counts of bank fraud,

which carries up to 30 years in prison, as well as 3 counts

of Identity theft, carrying an additional 2 years.

On March 21st, 2024, Demasi plead guilty to the charges:

"A Mt. Pleasant man charged with bank theft and another crime in federal court is scheduled to enter a plea.

Originally charged with three counts of bank fraud and three counts of aggravated identity theft, Anthony Demasi is expected to plead guilty to one count each of bank fraud and identity theft at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in United States District Magistrate Judge Patricia A. Morris’ Bay City courtroom.

In exchange for the plea, Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Michael Buckley agreed to drop two bank fraud and two identity theft charges at sentencing.

As part of the plea agreement, Demasi is paying more than $12,000 in full restitution

to two FDIC- insured banks before or at the time of sentencing, Buckley said.”

Scandals and federal indictments are nothing new

for Anthony Demasi, a Michigan native who moved

to Illinois after graduating from Georgetown Law School.

In the early 2000’s, Demasi ran the streetsof Chicago, owning multiple popular night clubs,

and a seemingly successful investment firm

before it all went wrong.

However, in 2007, Demasi’s firm, Tsunami Capital,

was charged with fraud by the US Commodity Futures

Trading Commission:

In 2009, Demasi was indicted by a federal grand jury

in Illinois over a $5 million ponzi scheme he was running:

Court documents chronicledDemasi’s unruly behavior and Adderall

abuse during the case, with the Prosecutor even correctly

predicting Demasi would return to scamming again

in the future.

Demasi plead guilty to the charges, and was sentenced to 5 years in prison:

Demasi was then released on probation back to

Michigan in 2015:

Demasi soon took over Coker’s former non-profit,

The Beta Sole Foundation.

Beta Sole is a whole ‘nother rabbit hole itself.

https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/812815725

“State records show David Coker helped create the

nonprofit in 2017.

One of his daughters received a college scholarship

from it in 2020.”

The victims in Demasi’s 2023 federal indictment were

Beta Sole employees/interns.

Beta Sole was also slated to get $150,000 out of the

Clare Health Park deal for “marketing/website” work,

in addition to another $300,000 for Demasi’s financial firm.

https://www.facebook.com/BetaSoleFoundation

Demasi is now suing Coker over the whole ordeal:

Coker is also the registered agent for Goldman Analytics LLC—the address listed in the official documents is Demasi’s former residence at 417 Wilcox Parkway in Clare:

As for Kunse, whose district includes Osceola and Mecosta Counties, as well as parts of Clare County and Lake County, he is up for re-election in August.

The filing deadline is April 23rd.
