Follow The MONEY: Every "Safe Roads YES!" Donor Will Ca$h In On Prop 1's Taxpayer Dollars

 By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)

A West Michigan Politics analysis of campaign finance documents shows EVERY single donor to the group stands to benefit financially from the $2 billion annual tax increase. The biggest donor to the group, who has given over $2 million, is even encouraging its members, construction companies, to give their employees May 5th off of work, as well as provide "fun gift certificates" to employees who prove they voted.

Over 40 years ago, "Deep Throat" told Woodward and Bernstein to "follow the money." Well, WMP is not The WP, but one doesn't need a secret insider source to expose the big money donors who fund the "Safe Roads YES!" campaign. Like Mulder on The X Files always said, "the truth is out there." Literally. Just check out the Secretary of State's website.

>>>And remember, there is no sunset-the $2 billion tax increase is FOREVER. Psssh, who needs Wall St. when you have the potential Return On Investment Prop 1 offers!?

Safe Roads YES! is expected to raise over $6 million by election day, and already has $3 million on the books.

>>>Here is who donated to "Safe Roads YES!" how much, and what each entity does:

Now that we know the players, let's take a look at  what they do.

MITA

The top dog, the million dollar donors. Hell, over $2 million! Prop 1 represents
"huge opportunities for the industry" according to MITA-that means dollar signs.

Who the heck is MITA?

"The Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA) is a statewide construction trade association that consists of nearly 600 Michigan companies representing construction disciplines such as road and bridge, sewer and water, utility, railroad, excavation and specialty construction throughout the state of Michigan."

Comments from the group also bring into question the quality of the warranty allegedly contained in the bill, and it looks like they will push for even more tax increases in the future, tied to "inflation."

"The opportunity for growth in revenue is significant in future years as the wholesale tax allows for inflationary increases, while the floor and ceiling that are set in the law protect against wild fluctuations.

The warranty legislation that was passed only expands that which is already in use at MDOT to be allowed for consideration at the local level."

In another post, they say that Proposal 1 will help move their industry forward.

"Remember that voting YES on Proposal 1 is our LAST, BEST CHANCE to properly invest in Michigan’s crumbling roads and bridges. It is SO IMPORTANT that everyone supports Proposal 1 on May 5, so that we can move our state forward, as well as our industry. "

>>>MITA is even encouraging employers to give employees the morning of May 5th off, as well as "fun gift certificates" for those who prove they voted!!!

"We are rapidly approaching Election Day: Tuesday, May 5, 2015. It is SO important that everyone does their part to Get Out The Vote with their employees.

Some members have taken matters into their own hands by deciding to give their employees the morning off or to start the workday a few hours later than usual on Tuesday, May 5. This is an effort to encourage employees to get to the polls without having to worry about adjusting their busy morning routines.

In addition, some members have chosen to take things one step further by hosting a random drawing for a couple of fun gift certificates, which employees can enter if they come in to work with an “I Voted” sticker on Tuesday, May 5. This is a unique and creative way to encourage your employees to head to the polls, while simultaneously getting your entire team involved in something important and out of the ordinary.

So here’s your charge: get creative and get your team fired up for May 5th and for Proposal 1! This is our last, best chance to invest in Michigan’s roads and bridges. We need everyone’s support, and we need all hands on deck."

Also: " MITA's top priority is to fight for and secure adequate long-term funding, with limited bureaucratic involvement, for the entire heavy construction industry."

This update came on 4/17, but it's probably more fitting for 4/20:

" Strong momentum is continuing to build for Proposal 1 and the Safe Roads YES campaign. We MUST keep the faith and continue to work hard to educate the public, as well as all staff and employees, friends and family members on the importance of supporting Proposal 1 on May 5th. MITA is hearing nothing but positive feedback from the work being done behind the scenes, as well as from the campaign and the Governor’s office."

"Strong momentum is continuing to build for Proposal 1 and the Safe Roads YES campaign." Strong momentum?? Maybe in the Twilight Zone...

It continues:

"We are 18 days out, so please make sure that you are doing EVERYTHING you can to Get Out The Vote.

Get creative and make sure your employees are educated on the issue, as well as given an opportunity to get to the polls.Keep in mind that absent voter ballots are available, so please fill out an application to receive one if you know you will be unable to vote in person on May 5th.MITA has a supply of truck magnets available at the front desk.

Please feel free to swing by the office to pick one up for your vehicle if you’re in the area. Truck magnets are a great, free way to advocate for Proposal 1 on the road. Please continue to show your support through social media by actively following MITA and Safe Roads YES on Facebook and Twitter.

Don’t forget to use the resources we have made available on the Proposal 1 Quick Links page on the MITA website, too. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call the MITA office at 517-347-8336."

MITA has also donated hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to many of the legislators who voted for Prop 1, including Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof

CONSUMERS ENERGY
While I can't pinpoint exactly what they will make money on, they are throwing money EVERYWHERE as they try to hijack Michigan's energy market, cutting choices from Michiganders while raking in billions of profits. Lawmakers don't want to deal with roads. Consumers has legislation it wants done...Think they are donating to "Safe Roads YES!" for nothing??

"Eliminating electric choice means abandoning free market principles and sticking Michiganders with hundreds of million in higher rates on their electricity - while two giant monopoly utilities rake in the profits," said MFF President Greg McNeilly."

Follow the money, the truth is out there.

  1. Wow... what a misleading post. You claim in the first sentence that "EVERY single donor to the group stands to benefit financially from the $2 billion annual tax increase", yet as to at least one donor, you admit that you "can't pinpoint exactly what they will make money on".

It's also interesting that you posted this just a day before the next contribution report will come out. Why not wait until you have the latest information to make the claim that "every" donor stands to gain?

  2. Brandon, you do a great job.
I think Nathan is getting HIS money followed. Who are you connected to Nathan? Levin ? The nerd Gov? Unions? The political leadership in the state? Time is running out for these money grabbing, self-serving sociopaths. There whole vote yes scampaign is flopping like a fish out of water. My god, the whole republican leadership PLUS Carl Levin. What a team!
Brandon, I heard this is the BIGGEST TAX INCREASE IN 50 YEARS! Is this true? Would our republican leadership do this to us? Maybe Carl has hypnotized them, they can’t be in their right minds.
Nathan what have you and Carl done to our republican controlled state?

  3. No, I'm voting no on Prop 1 (a stance I've had from the beginning). I just dislike dishonest reporting. Making a claim that every donor stands to gain and then admitting that you can't prove a donor stands to gain anything is journalistic misconduct, plain and simple.

  4. Journalistic misconduct, is that the 5 yarder or 15?
I think its pass (prop-1) interference...
He’ll probably get thrown out of the GAME!
